Innovative ITIL® Software Assurance Scheme nears 1st Anniversary

The "ITIL Software Scheme" is nearly a year old and already starting to reap benefits for software developers and end users. Tool vendors will be able to choose from a number of Licensed Software Assessors to assess their software tools. The first two Licensed Software Assessors are:

Software Management Consultancy - SMCG

Pink Elephant - www.pinkelephant.com

As IT complexity continues to increase, the need for IT management Best Practices is more critical than ever. The OGC remains committed to enabling best practice through its ITIL portfolio. However, a missing link in the OGC/ITIL portfolio had been the lack of an approval process for ITSM tools. There are now a large number of tools that claim to be "ITIL process compliant" and this scheme gives the end user the opportunity to see if these claims can be verified.

The scheme was launched at the itSMF Fusion Conference and Exhibition last September. At the launch event, Peter Brooks (FISM) Independent Consultant reviewed the ITIL Software Scheme. He said: "The potential marketing advantage to Vendors is reasonably clear. At a minimum, if a piece of software is certified to offer ITIL Process X, somebody completing an RFP can include this information in the knowledge that, so long as all the people and process work is done according to ITIL, the tool will provide the necessary support"

The scheme is administered by APM Group-the Accreditor (on behalf of OGC).

www.itil-officialsite.com/SoftwareScheme/ITILSoftwareScheme.asp

The advantage of this scheme over others in the market is clear as this scheme is unique in giving assurance of ITIL compatible processes within the tool.

There are three levels of assurance available within the scheme, Bronze, Silver and Gold dependent on the capability of the tool and its alignment to specific ITIL processes, how widely the product is used and the extent of positive feedback and references from end users. This feedback is critical because there was a need for customers to understand if the software tools and inherent documentation they were considering supported ITIL and were truly compliant with ITIL Best Practices.

Whilst it is recognized that tools themselves will not magically fix all process issues. they can provide invaluable assistance in supporting ITIL processes. Already the scheme has successfully recognized 14 software tools who have attained the required standard (7 tool's processes have been assessed to the Bronze level and 7 to the Gold level).

ITIL: A Project Manager's Perspective

If you are a Project Manager working in or with IT, you may have heard the acronym ITIL® (IT Infrastructure Library, a set of books similar in nature to PMI’s PMBOK Guide) or ITSM (IT Service Management – the concept of IT as a “service” to the business). If you haven’t heard of ITIL, you will. Why? Simply put: in terms of industry adoption, ITIL is one of the fastest growing frameworks in the IT industry today.

ITIL helps organizations increase IT efficiency, improve quality, and control costs. In fact, AMR Research reports that IT organizations that have implemented ITIL best practices have saved up to 10% in IT costs without sacrificing the quality of service delivery. That is why U.S. Computer Economics has projected that approximately 45% of all organizations, both large and small, in the US and Canada will have adopted ITIL best practices in some form by the end of 2008.
High Demand for ITIL Expertise

Companies are turning to ITIL, and the demand for individuals with skills and expertise in this area is increasing. So much so, in fact, that ITIL certifications rank as some of the highest paid certifications in technology, along with PMI’s CAPM and PMP credentials. In recent salary surveys from ZDNet’s Tech Republic , PMI and ITIL credentials consistently rank in the top three IT certifications industry wide. With ITIL’s continued growth in the United States, the demand for IT Project Managers with expertise in ITIL will continue.
Focus is on Process, not Technology

The most compelling and interesting similarity between PMI’s PMBOK Guide and the ITIL books is that both are descriptive frameworks centered around process, not technology.

What this means to you is that both are extremely approachable standards. For example, the PMP exam does not ask how you would go about creating a milestone task within Microsoft Project. Rather, it makes sure you understand the importance of creating milestones.

The ITIL books are the same way. In order to really understand IT Service Management as a practice, you do not need to understand servers or switches. Rather, you need to understand things like the importance of controlling change, defining service levels, and maintaining a catalog of all your services to the business in terms the business can understand.

Both are bodies of knowledge covering simple principles that are drawn from deep industry experience. They both detail concepts that are scalable and adaptable to each organization. For example, the Project Plan for a small, simple project is going to look very different for a large, complex one. In the same way, the process for managing a minor software patch release is going to have a different scale of requirements compared to a brand new, enterprise-wide software release.

What is ITIL?

ITIL® is the only consistent and comprehensive documentation of best practice for IT Service Management. Used by thousands of organisations around the world, a whole ITIL philosophy has grown up around the guidance contained within the ITIL books and the supporting professional qualification scheme.

ITIL consists of a series of books giving guidance on the provision of quality IT services, and on the accommodation and environmental facilities needed to support IT. ITIL has been developed in recognition of organisations' growing dependency on IT and embodies best practices for IT Service Management.

The ethos behind the development of ITIL is the recognition that organisations are becoming increasingly dependent on IT in order to satisfy their corporate aims and meet their business needs. This leads to an increased requirement for high quality IT services.
ITIL: Overview and Benefits

ITIL provides a systematic and professional approach to the management of IT service provision. Adopting its guidance offers users a huge range of benefits that include:

The translation of ITIL V3 Intermediate Examinations has begun

The APM Group would like to confirm that translations for ITIL® V3 Intermediate Examinations have commenced in the following languages and modules:-

Brazilian Portuguese - OSA
German – SO
Danish – OSA
Japanese – SOA
French – OSA
Spanish – SO

Work started on January 4th 2010, and is being done primarily in association with local itSMF Chapters and local translation agencies they have recommended. The key people are as follows:-

Brazilian Portuguese – Moracy Ferrari and Claudio Rostelato (Subject Matter Experts)
Danish – Anders Linde (DANSK IT)
French – Jean-Claude Beaudry (itSMF Canada), Robert Falkowitz (Subject Matter Expert), Vincent Guiheneuc (itSMFI)
German – Stephan Brendel (APMG Deutschland), Björn Hinrichs (itSMF Germany), Renate Eberle (TÜV SÜD)
Japanese – Joji Koyama (itSMF Japan)
Spanish – Marlon Molina (itSMF Spain)

The first translation to be available will be German and it is expected in April 2010. There will be two modules for each language. We are planning to release the first module in each language by May 2010 and the second, in the latter part of the year.

Further modules will be available after the refresh has been published in early 2011.
All English Intermediate papers have been monitored since release, and a sufficient number of candidates have now taken the exams to enable the examination panel to review them for their overall level of accuracy, difficulty, ease of understanding and applicability, against the performance metrics. Improved quality criteria have been applied during the assessment and review process to ensure the papers perform well in English. This was essential before translating into other languages.

We are confident that candidate performance in ITIL V3 qualifications will be consistent wherever they take a paper, in whatever language.

OGC withdrawal of ITIL version2

In June 2009 OGC announced that itSMF International 1 were undertaking a survey of the IT Service Management community to seek views on the uptake of ITIL version3 and the need to retain ITIL version2.

The survey had over 1300 responses, with a broad range of organisations providing a cross-representation of views from the community. There are some clear messages in the survey report:

* English versions of products need to be in the market to the end.
* Overall, less than 8% suggested version2 qualifications need to be available for more than 2 years (from the date of the survey).

OGC has considered these findings alongside its own requirements for the maintenance of the ITIL product set, and agreed that:
a. Withdrawal will be product based, with all language variants for individual qualifications and publications being removed at the same time.
b. Removal of version2 will complete on 30 June 2011. Specific product withdrawal will be as follows:

* V2 Foundation to cease 30 June 2010
* V2 Manager to cease 31 August 2010
* V2 Practitioner to cease 31 Dec 2010
* Foundation Bridge to cease 31 Dec 2010
